Point of Sale Technology

The term Point of Sale (POS) is often used in connection or relative with the hardware and software for checkouts.  In this article, we are going to run through the history of POS technology.
On the first half of 20th century, Point of Sale Systems had made huge advancements from the mechanical cash registers. An example of such type of registers was the National Cash Register (NCR) models. Such registers recorded data on paper or journal tapes and required extra steps to transcribe the information into the retailer's accounting platform. The next evolution of the POS was to convert the mechanical workings into electrical (great!). An instance of this type of register was the NCR Class 5 model.
Registers operated by computers were introduced in 1973, for example the IBM 3653 Store System and the NCR 2150. The other computer-based manufacturers were Rigitel, TRW, and Datachecked. In the same year, another development is the integration of UPC/EAN barcode readers with Point of Sale Systems. Then in 1986, the Point of Sale Systems became based on PC (Personal Computer) technology with the introduction of the IBM 4683.
During the late 1980s till the end of 1990s, standalone credit card devices were developed and introduced so that credit card processing could be more easily and securely integrated. The VeriFone Tranz 330, Hypercom T7 Plus, or Lipman Nurit 2085 are some of the popular examples. These relatively simple devices (compared to technologies today) have evolved in recent years to provide processing of multiple card-based applications and also provide age verification & employee time clock.

Currently, retail POS Systems were among the most sophisticated, powerful and user friendly computer networks in commercial usage. POS Pro for Prestashop users is one of the examples. Point Of Sale Pro enables you to sell your items online as well as offline, at your stores / warehouses, exhibitions, trade conferences or via phone / chat. And with this Prestashop POS module, all transactions are connected to your centralized database on cloud. You can check it out at PrestaMonster.com.
